The LifeSaver canteen is a portable h2o purification device. The bottle filters out objects larger than 15 nanometres.
Evolution [edit]
Afterward the 2004 Asian seismic sea wave and Hurricane Katrina disaster in the U.Southward., Michael Pritchard, a h2o-treatment expert in Ipswich, England[one] began to develop the LifeSaver bottle later seeing that it took multiple days for water to accomplish refugees.[ii] [3] Pritchard presented a prototype of the LifeSaver at 2007'southward DSEi London, where the production was named "Best Technological Development".[ii] [iv] Pritchard's entire stock of one,000 bottles sold out within four hours of the presentation.[three]
Speaking at TED in 2009, Pritchard estimated that by using the LifeSaver bottle, reaching the Millennium Development Goals of halving the number of people without drinking water will toll $viii billion; while $20 billion would provide drinking h2o for anybody on Earth.[5]
Independent examination results [edit]
In 2007, the LifeSaver bottle was tested past the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the results found information technology to completely filter out all bacteria and viruses.[6]
Utilise [edit]
The bottle'due south interchangeable filter can purify between iv,000 and half-dozen,000 litres (1,050 to i,585 gallons) earlier it stops working and needs to be replaced.[2] It filters out objects bigger than 15 Nanometres—including viruses, bacteria, and cysts.[iii] [4] The carbon filter does non require chemicals.[four] The process of filtering the water takes twenty seconds, allowing for 0.71 litres (1.5 pints) of water to be filtered.[four] Once a filter has reached its limit, information technology volition not allow contaminated water to be drunk.[4] The LiveSaver bottle has been used by soldiers for drinking water as well as cleaning wounds.[2] [3] [four]
To filter the h2o, ane puts contaminated water in the dorsum of the bottle, then screws the lid on. The chapeau has a built in pump which is operated manually with a hand; the pumping action forces the contaminated h2o through the nano-filter and safe drinking water collects in another bedchamber in the bottle. The drinker then opens the top of the canteen from which safe drinking water comes out.
A much larger version of the LifeSaver bottle, called the LifeSaver Jerrycan, has the same filtering engineering. The can allows for the filtration of 10,000 to 20,000 litres (2,650 to 5,300 gallons).[7] One jerrycan filter tin provide h2o for four people over a three-year bridge.[five]
Limits [edit]
The canteen can be used to filter urine and will remove all microbiological contamination. However, there will be an amount of dissolved salts that tin can not exist removed. Metals such as iron, and salt from salt water cannot exist removed finer, either.[viii]
